C.J. HOLLING
Claus John Holling and his wife Agusta came west from Scott County in 1875. They settled in Crawford County, near Schleswig, where he taught school for several years, and later moved to Vail where he had a furniture and undertaking business. After selling the business they moved to Aspinwall in 1893. They had a general store in the building that also included the Post Office, and Mr. Holling was postmaster for 15 years. Their living quarters were also in the store building, located on the east side of Main Street near what is now Schilling's Machine Shop.

One day while tending the store he had an encounter with a "tramp," who upon entering the store demanded a handout. While the manager was not in the mood for giving hand-outs, he told the stranger that he was lame and could not give him anything (Mr. Holling suffered from leg ulcers). The stranger quickly replied "me lame too."

When Mr. Holling came to the Aspinwall vicinity he held classes in German as well as English, teaching the young people.

The Hollings had a daughter, the late Mrs. D.P. Robertson of Manilla; they also raised their granddaughter, Anna C. Heicksen Stammer. Anna's mother died at the time of Anna's birth.

Mr. Holling died in his home in Aspinwall September 15, 1908. Mrs. Holling then moved to the farm home of John and Anna Stammer in Iowa Township. In 1918 she moved to Manilla and lived with her daughter, Mrs. Robertson, until her death July 29, 1920, at the age of 91 years.

ODDS AND ENDS
I can remember when I was visiting Grandpa and Grandma Schroeder, whose home was next to the jail. Hoboes and bums would come to the door, asking for food, and Grandma, being a generous one, would contribute. My cousins, Alvin and Robert Schilling, who were trappers, skinned their animals in the shed to the rear of Grandpa Schroeder's house. The remaining carcasses were wanted by the hoboes, who cooked and ate the meat. Their report was that the 'possum meat was the best eating.

ASPINWALL ROBBERY
Monday evening someone broke into the post office and store at Aspinwall and took considerable merchandise, the exact amount never to be known.
It snowed the same evening and their tracks were followed and there is evidence that the party committing the crime headed towards Manning.
There is also evidence that points to local talent in Manning. A box of matches, some cigarette stubs, the seeing of a couple enter Manning, and other evidence is in the hands of Marshal Con. Dietz, who has been quietly getting the evidence together, and the chances are good that at the next meeting of the grand jury at Denison an indictment will be made. There has been considerable petty thieving the past year in the vicinity of Manning and the officials are on the right trail -- at least this last robbery points that way. When arrests are made no one will be surprised except the guilty parties, and their only surprise will be that they were not arrested sooner.

PAUL WILLIAM JAHN FAMILY
(taken in part from the Crawford County History, written in 1911)
"The possibilities awaiting in America for wide awake, ambitious and capable young men is clearly illustrated in the success that has attended the efforts of Paul William Jahn in establishing a home in Crawford County. Coming to this state as a 16-year-old boy, he applied himself to farming and is now the owner of 440 acres; his farm yielding an income which places him and his family far beyond possibility of want. This desirable condition has been brought about through Mr. Jahn's industry and good management.

"He is a native of Holstein, Germany, born April 6, 1857, and is the son of John Frederich and Catherina (Growth) Jahn, both of whom were born in Holstein, Germany. In the spring of 1872 the family emigrated to the new world and located on the raw land in Section 12,

Hayes Township in Crawford County (just east of the Five Mile House, second place on the north).

"The tract was developed by the father and sons into a productive farm which is still in possession of the family. John Frederich and Catherina moved to Westside in 1901 and there he died in 1906. His wife died in 1908. Their remains were interred in the Hayes Township Cemetery.

"There were seven children in the family, three sons and four daughters. One son died in infancy. The other two sons were Paul William of this review, and Herman, who is now living on the home place. Sisters were Anna, wife of Claus Anthony of Carroll County; Maggie, who married H.C. Martens of Westside; Amelia, wife of George Buck, also of Westside; and Lena, who is deceased.

"Paul William Jahn received his preliminary education in Germany and grew to maturity under the friendly shelter of the stars and stripes. At the age of 22, he began farming on his own account and located on 80 acres in Hayes Township, which he proceeded industriously to improve. He has made four sets of improvements on his land and his farm of 440 acres is one of the valuable properties in Crawford County. He uses discrimination in this work and gives his attention largely to raising graded stock which he feeds for the market." Between 1911 and 1916 Mr. Jahn became the first farmer in the area to raise and sell Hampshire hogs.
