On the Co-op tour to Coffeyville, Kansas, a stopover was made in Iola, Kansas,
so that Iola Stammer could take a picture of the theater with its big
"Iola" sign.
On the way home, an overnight stop was made in Kansas City. To give the folks a
treat, the whole group was taken to a production of "Porgy and Bess."
It was a little high class for this group of farmers! Afterwards, the bachelors
in the group, Keith Clifford, Chris Brandt and Roy Schilling, tried to sneak
away from the rest to attend a burlesque show.
Clarence and Iola Stammer, Arnold and Luella Brus and Les and Irene Genzen
followed them and took seats right behind them.
The boys were really enjoying the "bumps and grinds" until one of
them happened to look around and saw us sitting there. The poor embarrassed
fellows all slid down in their seats and tried to hide!

LUCILLE AND LOUIS BOELL
Lucille Lamp, daughter of Amelia and Hubert Lamp, was one of four daughters
raised on a farm north of Aspinwall. Her sisters are Eunice, Elverda, and Joanne.
The girls attended Iowa Township No. 2 school.
Lucille was a 1941 graduate of Manning High School, receiving a Normal Training degree. She was 16 at the time, however, and not eligible to teach until she was 18, although she did do some substitute teaching during the next two years.
After a number of years of teaching, Lucille left the profession and became a licensed cosmetologist. She owned her own shop in Manning, the Klip and Kurl, located where the Manning Plaza was later built.
During this time, Lucille met her husband-to-be, Louis Boell, son of Paul and Helen Boell, who were also living near Aspinwall. He had received his honorable discharge from the Army after returning from Alaska. They were married December 15, 1954, at the Zion Lutheran Church in Manning by Rev. George Eschenbacher. Farming was Louis' profession, so Lucille became a farmer's wife.
August 1, 1959, they became parents of a daughter, Brenda. Brenda attended school in Manilla, where music became her hobby and she learned to play six musical instruments. She has the distinction of being the first student from the Manilla school to earn the Louis Armstrong Jazz Band Award, with plaques with her name engraved hanging at the school and in the Boell home. Brenda is presently a student at Iowa State University at Ames, where she is majoring in Animal Science Pre-Vet.

CLARENCE AND MERCEDES
BOWERS
While most people were seeking their fortunes by going
west, Clarence "Peg" Bowers had a different idea and headed south to
Iowa in 1932. Leaving the rest of his family in Olivet, South Dakota, he joined
his brother who had come to the Manning area earlier. Peg arrived ready to work
and soon found himself picking corn for 1 1/2c a
bushel. He continued working at various farms and eventually worked his way
from $7 a month to $35 a month in 1936. During these same Depression years he
met Mercedes Strosahl, who was piling up a fortune earning 35c a day doing
domestic work in various homes in the area.
In 1937 they decided to pool their resources, and they were married June 16. The following year they moved to the Johnny Hockett farm one mile east of Aspinwall. The farm had appeal for many reasons. The land was originally part of a tract of land sold to Iowa by the United States Government and signed by Abraham Lincoln; there was a basement barn; and the house was the oldest in the area. In fact, a generation earlier, it had been the only building west of Manning.
In 1954 they bought the farm and built a different home in 1962.
Peg and Mercedes have two children, Dick and Kay. Dick works in Denver at Factory Outlet as a Manager. He lives with his wife Jan and two daughters, Julie and Niki, on an acreage near Berthoud, Colorado. Kay lives in Council Bluffs and teaches English to foreign students.
