John Schilling was drafted into the Army during World War I from Sumatra, Montana, where he was homesteading land.
He was inducted at Fort Lewis, Washington July 4, 1918.
He was discharged with the rank of Corporal September 17, 1919.

JOHN SCHILLING
John Schilling, 75, died unexpectedly at his home in Aspinwall Thursday morning, November 7, 1968. He had been in failing health since suffering a heart attack in 1951.

Services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Ohde Funeral Home in Manning, with burial in the Manning Cemetery. The Rev. Robert G. Rushing, minister of the Presbyterian Church, will officiate. Military honors and pallbearers will be provided by the American Legion Post No. 22 and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 3517, both of Manning. Friends may call at Ohde Funeral Home starting at 4 p.m. Friday.

Mr. Schilling, son of Nick and Elizabeth (Girst) Schilling, was born December 10, 1892, in Mosalem Township, Dubuque County. He attended school in the Dubuque area and came to Crawford County as a young man. He homesteaded in Montana until entering military service, and after World War I, returned to the Aspinwall area where he farmed and also worked as a carpenter until his death.

His marriage to Emma Schroeder took place November 21, 1923.

Surviving with his wife are five sons, Alvin and Roy, at home; Robert, York, Nebraska; Dewey of Chester, Nebraska, and Ronald, of Aspinwall; two grandsons, David and Jeffrey Schilling; two sisters and a brother. Ten brothers and sisters preceded him in death.


John & Emma are buried in the Manning Cemetery.
