Jack J., son of John J. and Milda Schnoor Lorenzen, was born December 12, 1928, on the family farm south of Manilla in Crawford County, Iowa. He attended country school at Jefferson Township #3 in Shelby County and graduated from Manilla High School in 1946. Jack then worked as a mechanic at Struve Motor in Manning.

On November 17, 1950, Jack entered the United States Army and served in Korea as a driver and mechanic with the 3rd Infantry Division. On March 14, 1952, while he was on leave, Jack was united in marriage with Wava Ruth Lacy at the United Methodist Church in Manning. Three children were born to this union. Jack attained the rank of sergeant and received his honorable discharge on August 17, 1952. He then returned to Manning and resumed working at Struve Motor. In 1953 Jack and Wava began farming southwest of Manning near Botna in Crawford County until moving to the present family farm east of Manning in 1962. After they retired from farming in 1995, Jack did seasonal work for the Aspinwall Coop.

As a member of the United Methodist Church, Jack served on the building committee and held several offices. He served three terms with the Manning School Board and four terms with the Aspinwall Coop Board. He was also a member of the Masonic Lodge, American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars of which he was a life member. Jack enjoyed reading western novels, fishing and having coffee with friends and family. Jack was a farmer by heart and a mechanic by trade. He loved his farm and was proud to have improved the land through conservation and other means. He enjoyed repairing and restoring antique tractors and simply tinkering with a piece of machinery until it worked.
Jack's favorite saying was, "If I can't fix it, I'm going to fix it so no one else can fix it!"

On Sunday, February 8, 2004, Jack died peacefully at Mercy Medical Center in Des Moines, Iowa. He was 75 years, 1 month and 27 days of age.

Jack was preceded in death by his parents and a brother Donald in infancy.

He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Wava Lorenzen of Manning; three children: son Dean Lorenzen and wife Shelli of Manning and their children: Jason Lorenzen and wife Tracie and son Lucas, Jeff Lorenzen and wife Vanessa and daughter Raegan, Kelli Lorenzen and fiance Kent Eilers; son Dan Lorenzen and wife Jan of Manning and their children: Amy and husband Tim Ferneding, Andrea Lorenzen Detlefsen, Kasie and husband Brett Sanford, John Lorenzen and Ben Lorenzen; daughter Boni and husband Burke Johnson of Manning and their son Jackson; brother Alan Lorenzen and wife Bonnie of Manilla; sister-in-law Sandra and husband Leroy Miller of Harlan; brother-in-law Donald Lacy and wife Janine of Ashland, MO; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Final Harvest
He was bound to the land from the day of his birth
His roots anchored deep in the fertile earth
Nurtured, sustained, by the soil he grew
And his fife, like his furrows, ran straight and true.

In faith, each spring, he planted the seeds
In hope, to reap for his family's needs
With patience, he waited for the harvest to come
To gather the fruits of his labor home.

Ever turning seasons, the years sped past
Till the final harvest came at fast
Then claimed anew by beloved sod
He was gathered home to be with God
