HUGO EDWARD HEINRICH RESS
Hugo, son of Gustave and Anna Fischer Ress, was born September 27, 1902, on a farm four miles south of Manning in Lincoln Township, Audubon County, Iowa. He attended country schools near his home. In 1913 the family moved to a farm one mile east of Manilla. Hugo went to Manning to Lutheran German School where he was confirmed in 1918.

In 1926 Hugo attended Auto Mechanics School in Lincoln, NE. He returned to Manning and on December 7, 1927, he was united in marriage with Ola Meisel. This union was blessed with six children. After a few years of farming, they moved into Manning on Center Street and Hugo took up the mechanics trade in local repair shops and garages. Many years later, Hugo and Ola operated the H & O Cafe and a Coffee Shop on Main Street in Manning. Later in life he was the custodian at Terrace Apartments in Manning.

Hugo was a member of Zion Lutheran Church for 82 years and was a member of the Lutheran Laymen's League.

After living on Center Street for 67 years, Hugo became a resident of the Manilla Manor Nursing Home in May of 1999 because his health had begun to fail. Later that year on November 19, he moved to the Manning Plaza where he died on Thursday, January 20, 2000, at the age of 97 years, 4 months and 18 days.

Hugo is preceded in death by his parents; wife Ola; daughter Ramona in infancy; son Hugo Jr. killed in the Korean Conflict; three sisters: Clara Hammer; Ella Asmus; and Pauline Lake; and two brothers Ernest Ress and Emil Ress.

He is survived by his children: Lola and her husband Vernon Ehlers of Arcadia; Benjamin Ress and his wife Judith of Adel; Zita and her husband Galen Harms of Anamosa; and Vincent Ress and his wife Alice of Dallas, OR; 12 grandchildren and several step-grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren and several step-great-grandchildren; fours sisters: Ida Jochimsen of Manning; Edna Hansen of Omaha, NE; Ann Hoelscher of Perry; Norma Wenzel of Perham, MN; one uncle Herman Fischer of Manning; and many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

To every thing there is a season, and a time to every purpose under the heavens:

A time to be born, and a time to die; a time to plant, and a time to pluck up that which is planted:

A time to kill, and a time to heal; a time to break down, and a time to build up:

A time to weep, and a time to laugh; a time to mourn, and a time to dance;

A time to cast away stones, and a time to gather stones together; a time to embrace, and a time to refrain from embracing:

A time to get, and a time to lose; a time to keep and a time to cast away;

A time to rend, and a time to sew; a time to keep silence, and a time to speak;

A time to love, and a time to hate; a time of war, and a time of peace.

Eccl 3:1-8
