Elsie, daughter of Peter D. and Bertha C. (Ronnfelt) Schroeder, was born August 10, 1903, five and one-half miles north of Manning, Iowa. She attended the rural school near her home.
On February 20, 1924, Elsie was united in marriage with Alfred Rix. Four children, Delores, Donald, Allen, and Larry, were born to this union. The family farmed near Manning until moving into town in 1948. Alfred died in 1966.
Elsie had been in failing health for three years and was hospitalized on February 4 of this year. A month later she moved to the Manning Plaza Nursing Home where she died on Wednesday afternoon, March 15, 1995 at the age of 91 years, 7 months, and 5 days.
Besides her husband, Elsie was preceded in death by her parents; five sisters: Lillie Joens, Amanda Frahm, Laura Joens, Lena Joens, and Edna Schroeder; two brothers, Herman Schroeder and Elmer Schroeder; and a great-grandson, Shane Johnson.
Survivors include her children: Delores and her husband, Arthur Kuhn, of Manning; Donald Rix and his wife, Donna, of Albuquerque, New Mexico; Allen Rix and his wife, Bev, of Manning; and Larry Rix and his wife, Dorothy, of Des Moines; nine grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren; two step-great-grandchildren; the following in-laws: Art Rix and his wife, Ila, of Manning and Florence Rix, of Portland, Oregon; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
Elsie was a member of Zion Lutheran congregation in Manning. She enjoyed cooking, crocheting, and word search puzzles. A special joy to her was when friends would stop by her house for coffee. Above all, Elsie treasured being with her family.
